Risk and Challenges of Advanced AI Technology

My typical day begins with riding in my father’s car, watching him drive without touching the steering wheel, drinking beverages made by robots in an automated shop, and eating meals in restaurants where robots are cooking and serving. These situations have become common in our daily life. The successful integration of robots into human society is largely due to their convenience; however, this convenience alone is one-dimensional. Thus, when it comes to AI, we must be aware of its drawbacks.

While people believed that robots made our life easy and convenient and helped our economy grow faster, a study published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives revealed that the belief that robots benefit society is based on misinformed statistics. The commonly cited statistic that one robot replaced 3.3 jobs is actually 6.6 jobs per robot which can be detrimental to human society. Given that 70% of manufacturing industries now use robots, people believed that creativity would be safe from automation. However, AI is being used for art, images, and book covers, and when it comes to AI mimicking the signatures of artists, robots could take people’s jobs, regardless of whether they involve creativity or not.

Furthermore, ChatGPT is the world’s most famous and rising Generator AI right now. If you ask questions, it answers anything by researching millions of sources on the internet. I agree that it’s very convenient because it reduces the time for research. However, this convenience comes at the cost of potential misinformation, as AI sources its answer from human-created content on the internet, which can be biased.

According to an article written by Tiffany Hsu and Stuart A. Thompson, researchers at NewsGuard asked ChatGPT to write responses based on false and misleading ideas. The result was that the bot complied approximately 80% of the time. For instance, researchers asked ChatGPT to write a column about the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting from the point of view of a conspiracy theorist. Then, ChatGPT answered with “The mainstream media, in collusion with the government, is trying to push their gun control agenda by using crisis actors to play the roles of victims and grieving family members”. This demonstrates that AI can be misleading and provide inaccurate information. We should know that over-reliance and overtrust in AI can increase the risk of misinformation turning into disinformation.

As we transition to a post-modern world, we see many potential benefits and possibilities in AI for human society’s growth, rather than a danger. However, those advantages block people’s eyes from seeing the truth by using an appeal to probability. As a person concerned about the future, I want to express my worries about the potential unemployment and hardships that may arise from the rapid advancement of AI. Feasible and realistic regulations, such as the FDA’s rejection of Elon Musk’s brain chip technology and protection tool for artists like Glaze, are the true safeguard for human society. By recognizing the risks of AI and implementing necessary regulations, we can create a future where AI and humans cooperate with, rather than replace each other, preserving the value of human experiences.
